Lady Gaga Spotted Walking Again (in Heels!) Following Hip Surgery

Lady Gaga Spotted Walking Again (in Heels!) Following Hip Surgery
The "Born This Way" singer was snapped strutting her stuff in a pair of black kitten heels as she headed to a yoga class in New York City's East Village on Tuesday, April 2. While wearing sky-high pumps is nothing new for Mama Monster (armadillo heels anyone?), the fancy footwear likely surprised her fans, since she has been confined to a wheelchair since undergoing hip surgery February 20. Unfortunately, it looks like the yoga class may have been a bit too much too for the famous pop star to handle, as she was spotted rolling out of the studio in her trusty Louis Vuitton wheelchair. While she only managed to rock her latest foot candy for a brief stint, perhaps it will give fans hope that she'll be returning to the stage soon. Prior to her surgery, Gaga's Born This Way Ball Tour was sidelined after doctors discovered that she had a labial tear in her right hip. Never one to keep her little monsters in the dark, Gaga took to Twitter to explain her medical woes. "I've been hiding a show injury and chronic pain for sometime now, over the past month it has worsened. I've been praying it would heal," she tweeted February 12. "I hid it from my staff, I didn't want to disappoint my amazing fans. However after last nights performance I could not walk and still can't." Despite being stuck in her fancy wheelchair these days, the 27-year-old, who celebrated her birthday on March 28, certainly gets around. Last week she was photographed being wheeled into Windy City eatery Spiaggo for a celebratory dinner with her boyfriend, "Chicago Fire" star Taylor Kinney.

At fundraisers Obama talks climate, regaining U.S. House

At fundraisers Obama talks climate, regaining U.S. House
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama used fundraisers on Wednesday to assuage supporters' concerns about a transnational oil pipeline and his commitment to tackling climate change, while urging them to drive Republicans out of power in Congress in 2014. The Obama administration is expected to decide later this year whether to approve construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from Canada's oil sands to Texas. Environmentalists oppose the project, saying its carbon emissions would contribute unnecessarily to global warming. Supporters say the pipeline is necessary to increase U.S. energy independence. On a fundraising swing to boost Democrats' chances of winning back the House of Representatives, Obama highlighted his administration's achievements and pledged to work with Republicans. But climate change was clearly on his mind. "Despite a very aggressive agenda on the other side to block action, we've been able to double fuel-efficiency standards on cars, we've been able to take mercury out of our air, we have been able to reduce carbon emissions in this country," he said at the first of two fundraisers on Wednesday night. That fundraiser, a cocktail reception priced at $5,000 a person, was held at the home of Kat Taylor and her husband, billionaire former asset manager Tom Steyer, an ardent opponent of the pipeline project. Steyer has become a polarizing figure among Democrats recently after diving into the U.S. Senate primary contest in Massachusetts. The San Francisco billionaire sided with Representative Edward Markey, a Keystone critic, while pouring financial resources into attack ads against Representative Stephen Lynch, who has supported the pipeline. Obama did not mention Keystone during his remarks, but he came back repeatedly to the topic of global warming, a clear nod to the concerns of his host. "We've got more work to do in terms of dealing with climate change and making sure that we've got an economy that is energy-efficient," Obama said. The notion that there was a contradiction between supporting the economy and supporting the environment was false. Hundreds of anti-pipeline activists lined the streets near Obama's second fundraiser, a $32,500-per-person dinner held at the home of billionaires Ann and Gordon Getty. Wearing a sign that read "We called for you, now we're calling on you," Leslie Terzian, a small business owner from San Francisco, said she volunteered for Obama's campaigns in both 2008 and 2012 but was disappointed that the president had not voiced opposition to the pipeline. "I'd guess pretty much everyone here voted for Obama," Terzian said. "But he's not representing us. He just doesn't have the political will." PELOSI POWER Climate change issues aside, Obama told donors he wanted to see Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, become the chamber's top official again in the future. "I expect that she is going to be once again speaker of the House," Obama said of the California Democrat. To make that happen, Democrats must take control of the House by wining 17 seats in 2014. The fundraising trip to California, which continues on Thursday, was meant to help that effort by filling Democratic coffers. Obama is also trying to get Republican support for key policy priorities including immigration reform and deficit reduction in Washington. His broad comments - which were not especially critical of the opposing party - appeared to be designed not to antagonize negotiating partners on Capitol Hill. "My intention here is to try to get as much done with the Republican Party over the next two years as I can, ‘cause we can't have perpetual campaigns," he said. But in the same set of remarks, he urged Democrats to do everything they could to help Pelosi take back power from Republican John Boehner, the current House speaker.

Melissa Joan Hart sheds baby weight, signs on with Nutrisystem

Melissa Joan Hart sheds baby weight, signs on with Nutrisystem
Melissa Joan Hart may have been able to work magic when she played teenage witch "Sabrina" on television about a decade ago. But losing pounds after giving birth to her third child in September wasn't likely to happen with the snap of magical fingers. Instead, she reportedly turned to Nutrisystem for help in shedding the pesky pounds (20, so far). On Tuesday, Nutrisystem announced via news release that Hart, 36, is its newest spokes-celebrity. In that role, she'll be able to "explain it all" for you -- kind of like her character Clarissa did in another popular show from the early 1990s. This news comes just in time for the third season of her latest series "Melissa & Joey," which is scheduled to start in May on ABC Family. Apparently this is a really good time to have a new brand ambassador and get the public's attention focused on Nutrisystem's -- er, system. According to the company, "Easter Monday" ranks right up there with "Super Bowl Monday" as a "diet decision" day. Hmmm. Let' see: Easter ham, eggs, chocolate bunnies, Peeps. No wonder.

Angelina Jolie opens a girls school in Afghanistan

Angelina Jolie opens a girls school in Afghanistan
Looking for inspiration to make the world a better place? Well, Angelina Jolie has opened a school for hundreds of girls in Afghanistan and intends to open more funded by profits from her jewelry collection, according to a report out Monday. The all-girls school in a village outside of Kabul is attended by 200 to 300 primary-grade students in an area with a high refugee population, E! News reported. It's a girls school because the area, which was not named specifically, traditionally favors education for boys, E! said. Jolie, of course, is a goodwill ambassador for the UNHCR, the U.N.'s refugee agency. With plans for more schools in the works, the "In the Land of Blood and Honey" director is also making her jewelry line, the Style of Jolie, available at a retail level starting later this week at Tivol jewelers in Kansas, with a promise that 100% of profits will go to charity. "The beauty of these creations is matched by the beauty of spirit behind Angelina's most heartfelt mission — to empower children in crisis," said Robert Procop, Jolie's longtime jeweler and business partner in the Style by Jolie project. The first funds from their collaboration, he said, went to the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict to open the school in Afghanistan. "Beyond enjoying the artistic satisfaction of designing these jewels, we are inspired by knowing our work is also serving the mutual goal of providing for children in need," the actress told E! exclusively.

First Lady Says Barbara Walters Is One of Her Favorite People

First Lady Says Barbara Walters Is One of Her Favorite People
Alex Wong/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Barbara Walters is staying mum on the rumors that she's planning her retirement. If she does step down from her full-time job with ABC News and The View sometime in the next few years, she'll be missed around the White House. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, first lady Michelle Obama calls Walters one of her favorite people. She says Walters has "done the Christmas special here at the White House every year and it's always just a tremendous joy, as she tries to steal various items from the White House, but you know, it's Barbara. Barbara -- you can take what you want, whenever you want." Would the first lady ever consider hosting a talk show once her husband, President Obama, leaves office in 2016? It doesn't seem likely, but she says, "I have not had a moment to think about the next four years. This position is one of honor, but it is all consuming....What I do know is that I can’t predict anything. So, I can’t rule out anything or rule in anything, but I know that the president and I want to continue to serve in any way we can." The first part of Entertainment Tonight's interview with Mrs. Obama aired Monday night. Part two airs Tuesday night.
